We spoke to Joseph Havey, Brand Director at SaltStick, about the partnership and here’s what he had to say:

What inspired SaltStick to partner with Seas the Day Ocean Rowing Team?

Throughout our 20 years in business, we’ve come across a number of athletes who rely on our products to conquer some bold, almost unimaginable, accomplishments. It’s clear the Seas the Day is pursuing a monumental feat, and we’re honored that they proactively reached out for support since they rely on our FastChews. To support and hydrate a historic expedition like this is a no-brainer!

When you first heard about the ocean rowing team's upcoming endeavors, what intrigued you the most?

There were a couple things that intrigued us. First, the sheer size of the Pacific Ocean. It’s so big that from some angles in space, the entire planet appears completely blue. The fact that some folks are attempting to row across it, unsupported, is mind-blowing to us. Another aspect is the food carrying process… holding all your gear and food for the entire journey is a logistical feat in itself! 

Were there any specific moments or qualities about our team that sealed the deal for you?

We’re inspired by how determined, earnest and humble the Seas the Day Crew is. It was immediately apparent that they’re headstrong and completely confident in their abilities, and that attitude is contagious.

As a company, we value perseverance, precision, and passion. All three of these completely resonate with this expedition.

What makes this partnership more than just a sponsorship, but a meeting of minds and missions?

The collaborative aspects of this have transformed it from a sponsorship to a partnership. They genuinely rely on our products, and as hydration experts, we’re looking into this athletic mission with the same lens as our professional runners and triathletes. Beyond that, the creativity in each post is exciting. People are naturally curious on how they’ll stay hydrated, and by providing the water maker and electrolytes to the journey, that’ll be a fun story to share as folks about their water consumption (and why they can’t just drink the seawater).

What aspects of our journey are you most excited for or want to highlight?

The hydration process, for sure!

How will your products/services help the team?

Electrolytes are absolutely critical to any long athletic event. A several-month self-supported journey means that they’ll need efficient electrolytes, and we strongly believe our products are the best equipped electrolyte products in the world for the job.

Would you ever row an ocean?

I’m always up for a physical challenge, but this seems like a mental challenge way out of my wheelhouse. Maybe across the English Channel first!

What would your luxury item be if you were to row an ocean?

I’d like to bring a waterproof speaker so I could listen to music and podcasts. Other than that, a Kindle since that would save space and the stories would keep my mind occupied.
